Santa Monica’s Housing Progress

The City is required by the California Department of Housing and Community Department to report on its progress towards meeting housing goals and its Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) set forth in the adopted housing element. Each year, the City must identify how many housing units have been proposed, approved, and built. The housing dashboards below have been created to track how well the City is doing in meeting its RHNA targets. The information in the dashboards show multifamily housing and mixed-use projects that are pending, approved (i.e., received planning entitlements), under construction, or completed (i.e., final). Details regarding the type of housing (market rate, affordable, and single room occupancy), project status, and affordability mix are also provided in these dashboards.

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are legal secondary units allowed on residential and mixed-use properties with either at least one existing or proposed single-unit dwelling or a multiple-unit development. Also known as granny flats, carriage houses, or backyard homes, ADUs can be used for rental housing. The dashboard below provides a summary of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) that have been issued building permits.
